Originally recorded in 1957 and sung by Reri Grist for the West Side Story Broadway show soundtrack, then later for the 1961 feature film by Natalie Wood.

A popular song, it has also been covered by Matt Monro, Tom Waits, Barbra Steisand, Aretha Franklin, Pet Shop Boys, P. J. Proby, The Supremes, Phil Collins and the Glee cast.
