Who Am I? – Les Miserables

Who Am I? – Les Miserables

Another from Les Mis, “Who Am I?” isn’t a song i’d thought to do until it was requested so enthusiastically! It was quite a challenge to work out, but i think I got the notes below pretty close – I hope you enjoy playing this 🙂

F        Bb      Bb  ^C#  ^D# ^C-Bb
He thinks that man is me   ~

F      Bb    Bb  ^C#  ^D#  Bb
He knew him at a glance

F      Bb-Bb  ^C#  ^C#  ^C-Bb
That stranger he has found

F          Bb     Bb  ^C#  ^D#  Bb
This man could be my chance

F#         B     B  ^D  ^D  ^C#-B
Why should I save his hide?

F#           B      B    ^D    ^E      B
Why should I right this wrong?

F#         B   B  ^D#  ^D# ^C#-B
When I have come so far  ~

F#         B – B      ^D#  ^E    B
And struggled for so long?

F  F    Bb  ^C  ^C#   Bb-Bb
If I speak, I am condemned

F F  F   Bb-Bb  ^C# ^D ^D
If I stay silent, I am damned…

^D ^C# B ^D-^C#
I am the master

B     ^D-^C#   B  ^D-C#
Of hundreds of workers

B    ^C#   F#   F#  F#
They all look to me…

^C#  B  A-^C#-B  A
Can I abandon them,

^C#       B        A    ^C#
How would they live

A   B   E    E    E
If I am not free?

D#  D# F#  B   B     F#-F#
If I speak, I am condemned

If     I     stay  silent,   I   am damned…

B     Bb   F#
Who am I?

F#   B   Bb-Bb     G#   G#  F#   G#-F#-D#
Can I condemn this man to slavery?

D#-G#  F#  F#  E   E  D#   E-D#-.B
Pretend I do not see his agony?

G# ^D#-^C#-^C#   B    B     G#   G#
This   innocent   who wears my face

F#    ^D# ^C#  ^C#-Bb   Bb   F#   F#
Who goes to judgement in my place…

F#    B   F#
Who am I?

F#   B    Bb-Bb  G#-G#  F#  G#-F#-D#
Can I conceal myself for evermore?

D#-G#   F#   F#    E      E    D#   E    D#-.B
Pretend I’m not the man I was before?

G#   ^D#  ^C# ^C#  B-B  G#  G#
And must my name until I die

F# ^D# ^C# ^C#  Bb Bb-F#-F#
Be no more than an alibi?

F#  B  G#-F#
Must I lie?

F#     B  Bb Bb-G# G# F#  G#-F#  D#
How can I ever face my fellow men?

D#   G#  F#  F#-E  E    D#-E   D#-.B
How can I ever face myself again?

G#   ^D# ^C#-^C#  B  B   G#  G#
My soul belongs to God, I know

F#  ^D# ^C# ^C#-Bb  Bb  F#-F#
I made that bargain long ago

F      ^E   ^D# ^D#   ^C#    ^C#   B       B
He gave me hope, when hope was gone

Bb    Bb   ^C#    ^C#   ^B    B-Bb     B
He gave me strength to journey on

B     Bb  F#
Who am I?

B    Bb   F#
Who am I?

F#   ^F#   ^F#-B
I’m Jean Valjean!

D#  ^E ^D#-^D#  ^C# ^C# B B
And so Javert, you see it’s true

Bb        Bb   ^C#  ^C#      B     B      Bb     B
That man bears no more guilt than you

B     Bb   F#
Who am I?

^F#   ^F#  ^F#  ^F#  ^B
Two-four-six-zero-one!
