The # means sharp (and the ‘b’ means flat), using the keyboard as an example:
I tend to use:
- Bb (A#)
- C# (Db)
- D# (Eb)
- F# (Gb)
- G# (Ab)
…as that’s what i’m used too, although the names are interchangeable 😀

That’s kind Mathew, thank you! My ability to pick out the notes has definitely improved over the 3 years i’ve been doing noob notes 🙂 I’m constantly playing through the songs on the site, refining the notes, fixing typos, taking on feedback from users, and adding extra bits i work out etc, the whole site is definitely an ongoing work in progress!
What’s really helped me is to start out playing along to the song at .75 speed on youtube =P that helps me work out the rough starting notes, and from there i start writing bits down and the other parts start to flow naturally. The better i know the song, the easier it is! Also much easier when there’s only 1 person singing at a time 😛 When i have a section of notes, i practice it til i can play up to speed, then play along to youtube again, usually still at slow speed, to check what i have is about right.
It’s a pretty long process, but its a nice way to spend my free time 🙂 I tend to be working on around 10 songs or so (on and off) at a time, to avoid that feeling of getting ‘stuck’ on a song – i often dramatically give up on a song forever, only to go back a week or two later, and the notes flow out the flute like they’d been impatiently waiting =P

Thanks so much for the lovely comment, it makes me so happy to know others are enjoying my noobnotes =D And your suggestion is timely, i’ve been working on adding switches to the settings panel so you can toggle between Bb/A# etc, just ironing out some bugs and tidying code so you can expect that feature soon =D I’d love to know how you worked out the key for Rewrite the Stars? …my music theory isn’t so great hehe 🙂 I’m often asked what key a song is in, and i can’t advise =D If I understood the rules for working out the key, i could code it in and add the info to the settings panel too =) nat
I get what you mean about the upbeat ones – i’m hooked on ‘dont stop me now’, getting up to speed slowly =D I’m so glad you found my site and are enjoying the notes – i get so much happiness from knowing i’m helping others too 🙂 🙂 ps. been working on ‘your woman’, aiming for today/tomorrow, it’s been a fun one so thanks for making me think of it =D
Me too!!! I listen to music all day, then rush home from work to play it all and write more notes out hahaha =D
